McBoost FAQ

Will the 48V phantom used to power the McBoost harm my ribbon mic?

No. In-line capacitors prevent the phantom power from reaching your ribbon mic.

Can I use the McBoost with a 48V powered condenser microphone?

You could, but only if you employed a battery or external 48V phantom supply to provide power to the mic. There would be no benefit to using the McBoost with a condenser as they should have sufficient output to feed any standard mixer or preamp mic input.

Can I use the McBoost with a tube mic?

Yes.

Can I use the McBoost with a low output direct box?

Yes. Although this would be an unlikely eventuality since most DI boxes produce enough output to feed a mixer or preamp mic input.

Can I connect the McBoost to a line level input?

As the McBoost requires 48V phantom for power and only produces a mic level output, connecting to a line level input is not advised.

Can I use the McBoost on an electric guitar or bass instead of a direct box?

You could try it, but you may find the input impedance to be too low to produce a nice sounding tone. Instruments sound best when they see a relatively high impedance in the 220K Ohm to 1 meg Ohm region.

Why is there no LED on the McBoost to let me know power is there?

LEDs are power hungry devices. We chose to use every ‘ounce’ of power to boost the mic signal. As a result, this left nothing to power the LEDs.

How does the McBoost compare to the Cloudlifter®?

They are similar and both very good. This is a summary of the feature set:

Feature McBoost Cloudlifter Z
