Why the Right Monitor Controller Can Make or Break a Mix

December 10th, 2025

Key Takeaways

  • Transparent monitoring without colouration
  • 2026 NAMM TEC Award nominee
  • Patent-Pending Clarity Circuit
  • Distortion-free sound & mastering-grade accuracy
  • Seamless control and flexible routing for any workflow

In both pro and home studio setups, upgrading and refining workflow is an ongoing process.

Unlike some technologies that require regular updates or replacement, your monitoring system will remain a fixture for many years to come.

Ensuring that your monitoring system provides an accurate sonic picture drove Radial to create the Nuance Select Studio Monitor Controller. Prioritizing transparent sound reproduction was the core factor in the design philosophy applied to the Nuance Select; a focus on reliability, simplicity, and sound quality that makes it ideal for professional facilities and home studios.

Nominated for a 2026 NAMM TEC Award, in the ‘Amplification Hardware/Studio & Sound Reinforcement’ category, the Nuance Select is a ‘high-fidelity monitor controller that delivers exceptional sound quality and clarity, allowing users to focus on getting professional results without any unnecessary bells and whistles.

“The Nuance Select focuses squarely on the most common, one could even say, time-tested features one needs in a monitor controller rather than trying to be all things to every possible user or, worse yet, tricky” – Paul Vnuk Jr. – Recording Magazine

What a Monitor Controller Actually Does (And Why It Matters)

Accurate monitoring is the foundation of every great recording.

A Studio Monitor Controller does more than change levels. It’s the centrepiece of your monitoring workflow: allowing you to switch sources/monitors, manage volume cleanly, make quick A/B comparisons, and preserve sonic integrity overall.

Unfortunately, some monitor controllers do more harm than good, introducing harmonic distortion and negatively impacting mix decisions across your entire mix by colouring/distorting what you hear before it hits your ears; essentially creating a barrier between you and the music.

The Nuance Select provides control and convenience; the ability to mute, dim, and route signals to different speakers, choose different sources, monitor using headphones, and do so quickly, easily, and, owing to Radial’s Patent-Pending Clarity Circuit, utterly transparently.

“…Most audio interfaces already have some degree of monitor control built in. At a pinch, you can also implement it in software. However, as time goes by, I’ve become increasingly convinced that a good quality, standalone monitor controller is one of the most important investments you can make” – Sam Inglis – Sound On Sound Magazine

Transparency Is Everything: Enter the Clarity Circuit

Designed by leading audio circuit designer, W.C. ‘Hutch’ Hutchison, the Clarity Circuit eliminates obstacles between you and your mix. Offering mastering quality sound, the Clarity Circuit is a Class-A Circuit with no capacitors and a true step attenuator that virtually eliminates distortion. The Nuance Select also features Jensen Transformers to provide sound as detailed as a straight wire from your interface to your speakers.

“The Nuance Select is exceptionally clean and absent of distortion to a degree you’ve likely not heard before… simply stark truth, linearity and confidence” – Rob Tavaglione – Mix Magazine

Built to last – Designed to inspire

The Nuance Select is a monitor controller that stays out of the way of your mix.

1. Sound quality over extra features – No talkback, no meters, no distractions:

The Nuance Select combines a tactile, analogue control surface with an intuitive feature set, offering all the control you need and nothing you don’t. It also has a distortion profile so low (a THD figure of <0.00001%) that it can’t be measured by most audio testing equipment.

2. Total control over your monitor setup:

Ideal for studioswith 1–2 sources and 1–2 monitor pairs, the Nuance Select allows you to silently switch between two sets of monitors and provides independent control over a subwoofer with zero sonic colouration. It features two sets of stereo source inputs, two sets of balanced TRS outputs for powered speakers, and a full-range subwoofer output that can be activated with either set of speakers.

Additionally, two independent, reference-grade headphone amplifiers (each of which can be assigned to a stereo source) are provided for monitoring/tracking, allowing you to feed a cue mix to musicians while you monitor the main mix. A rear panel Aux output can also be used to feed another headphone amplifier for live room tracking. This output can be turned on or off using a local control, and/or (like the headphone outs) assigned to either input source.

3. Good Looks – No Attitude:

Housed in a robust steel enclosure with a milled aluminum faceplate, the Nuance Select’s backlit monitor selection, rugged switches, and oversized chrome knobs provide simple, tactile control, seamless workflow, and an old-school look you’ll love.

“Our workflows change, but the integral pieces are used repeatedly. I can see this controller outlasting my current recording interface, monitors, and at least two more desktop computers. It comes with a three-year transferable warranty, so I know it’s built to last. For my money (I ended up buying it), it’s all pros and zero cons with the Nuance Select” – Scott McChane – Tape Op Magazine
